Karnataka is one of the 11 states that have wasted more than 1 lakh doses of the Covaxin vaccine. As per statistics from the Co-WIN portal, the state has wasted 1,29,261 doses so far, Ballari (61,203), Koppal (45,080), Mysuru (40,043), Hassan (34,985), and Davangere (34,985). (27,609).
The new information comes as health officials fear that a large number of recipients have yet to receive their second treatment, even as the Omicron variation and worries about a third wave have them on edge. Various causes for the wastage were given by health officials in Hassan, Koppal, and Gadag, ranging from vaccination administrators’ being unable to correctly draw materials into the syringe to waiting for data input. Covaxin is wasted because they only receive 20 dosage vials most of the time. They rarely get 20 people to show up at the same time in most areas. Covishield is now the preferred option.
The Gadag District Immunization Officer stated that as per Co-WIN, the wastage is 24,812 doses. However, they have been without a vaccination cold storage manager for four months, which explains the data lag. The district’s real wastage must be in the region of 20,000 to 45,000 doses.
