DK to submit proposal for Genome Sequencing Lab

The Karnataka government has requested the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada to submit a proposal stating the requirements for building a genome sequencing facility in the district. The district administration had asked that the government open a laboratory following the standards of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), as per DC.

Although 120 samples were sent to Bengaluru for genome sequencing, only 34 findings were accessible, and the other 86 samples are currently waiting for results. Until Thursday, the district had recorded seven instances of COVID-19’s Omicron variant. A proposal to establish a genome sequencing facility in the district will be submitted to the government in the next day or two, as per the DC.

The district commissioner (DC) has requested the government to set up a lab for whole-genome sequencing in his district. Earlier, the lab in Bengaluru did not have a backlog, but due to the detection of the Omicron variant, their workload may have increased. This lab will cater to the needs of South Karnataka, including the adjoining districts of Dakshina Kannada and Hassan
