Six airbags compulsory in all Indian cars

The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways has announced to install six airbags mandatory for all vehicles in India. From October this year, the road transport ministry will make it necessary for carmakers to provide a minimum of six airbags in motor vehicles that can carry up to eight passengers for improved occupant safety.

The Ministry has accepted a draught GSR notification requiring a minimum of six airbags. The Ministry is pushing for the installation of four airbags for the back occupants of these cars, boosting safety and reducing fatal and non-fatal injuries. Adding four extra airbags would cost between Rs 8,000 and 10,000, with each airbag costing between Rs 1,800 and 2,000 and changes costing Rs 2,000. However, they anticipate the price of automobiles now equipped with dual front airbags to rise by roughly Rs 30,000 as a result of the additional airbags.

The M1 vehicle category will now be required to include four extra airbags. This is a critical step toward making India’s motor vehicles safer than ever before. The rule will apply to vehicles that aren’t equipped with rear passenger airbags and are in the budget to mid-range category. Most vehicles under Rs 20 lakh only come with back airbags and side curtain airbags in the top-spec models.
