India lost its legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar at the age of 92, Lata Mangeshkar passed away today in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, was admitted to the hospital in January with Covid-19 and pneumonia.
The government said Two-day national mourning will be observed in memory of Lata Mangeshkar. The funeral will be held this evening at 6.30 pm at Shivaji park with full state honours. As a mark of respect for the legendary singer par excellence, the national flag will also fly at half-mast for two days.
Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore in Madhya Pradesh as the daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti Mangeshkar, She started her career at the early age of 13 after the death of her father as she had to look after her mother and four siblings.
Her father a well-known Marathi musician and theatre artist himself played an immense role in her early life of music. Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first Hindi song called “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” for the Marathi feature Gajaabhaau and went on to collaborate with Bollywood titans like Anil Biswas, Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad Ali, and SD Burman among others.
Lata Mangeshkar sang in more than 1,000 movies, also she has lent her voice to songs in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, and other regional languages. She has been honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Bhushan as well as several National and Filmfare Awards. This made her a popular and most acclaimed singer.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the loss of the Bharat Ratna awardee saying, “Coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerize people.”
Lata Mangeshkar is going to live forever in our hearts, but also a forever loss for the music and our country. The also called Nightingale of India will be always remembered.
