The taluk hospital in the interior taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, Puttur will be upgraded as a long wait of setting up a government medical college. Puttur MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor told that health minister Dr K Sudhakar has considered his demand for upgrading the government hospital in Puttur that has been receiving an average of nearly a lakh patients annually.
“At present, the hospital lacks sufficient doctors, especially in the gynaecology department. The hospital has registered 2.72 lakh outpatients and nearly 15,000 inpatients in the last three years. The hospital has been witnessing an average of 70 – 80 normal deliveries and 20 – 30 Caesarean procedures in a month. Hence, the hospital needs to be upgraded into a mother and childcare centre with all other specialities,” Matandoor said.
“We have already reserved six acres in the city to construct new buildings to upgrade the government hospital. The existing buildings will not be demolished while constructing new buildings. A proposal has already been submitted and it was brought to the notice of the health minister again in the Assembly session recently. He has agreed to hold a discussion on the proposal,” the MLA said
The city meets all the eligibility criteria for the government to sanction a medical college for Dakshina Kannada. Also, “If the hospital’s inpatient capacity is increased to 300, it will be easy for us to set up a government medical college in Puttur. We have already reserved 40 acres for the purpose of a government medical college,” he added.
