As the holy month of Ramzan will begin tomorrow, the social service unit of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Mangalore has decided to reach out to at least 500 poor patients suffering from renal illness and provide them with Ramadan kits.
Mohammed Mohsin, convenor of the campaign has been taking up similar campaigns for the last seven years and the number of beneficiaries is only increasing every time.
“We decided to help patients suffering from kidney problems and in need of regular dialysis because we have seen how families have spent a lot of money on the treatment and many patients have gone to the extent of selling their houses to meet the treatment costs. Most of the patients must undergo dialysis at least twice a week. Our intention is to ensure that at least during the holy month of Ramzan, these Muslim families can meet their treatment and ration costs and spend at least one month without worry,” he added.
The organisation aims at distributing the kits worth Rs 10,000 each which includes a ration kit of Rs 2,000 and the cost of eight dialysis procedures. A survey conducted by the organisation found that there are at least 500 poor patients in Dakshina Kannada district and many need transplantation, Mohsin said.
“We keep this fundraising campaign a low key one. Last year, we were able to reach out to 200 patients with renal issues by raising about Rs 14 lakh. The minimum cost of each kit was Rs 7,000. In addition, we had donated about 800 ration kits worth Rs 2,000 each to those families who have no earning members as well as suffering from other health problems. The families are selected after a proper survey and verifying their background. Our volunteers reach the kits at the beneficiary’s house and none of them is expected to come to the office to collect them. Donation slabs are fixed at Rs 3,000, Rs 5,000 or Rs 10,000,” Mohsin said.
Hats off to the team for thinking about these matters and for taking action to help those who are really in need.
