APD Foundation and Mangalore Meri Jaan work together to rebuild a waste picker’s damaged home

The city-based AD Foundation, in collaboration with the web news portal Mangalore Meri Jaan, rehabilitated the family of a waste picker in Mangalore by restoring their damaged house as part of a humanitarian endeavour. Mangala, a trash picker and Pachchanady inhabitant, benefited from the project. She was a casualty of a natural disaster. Her kutcha hut had collapsed a few days prior, leaving her without a place to dwell. She now lives alone with her two kids after her spouse left her. She struggles to provide for her basic requirements as the family’s lone breadwinner. “During my visit, Mangala made a humble request to help her by providing at least a temporary shelter to live with her children,” says Geetha Surya, the APD Foundation’s coordinator.

The online news source Mangalore Meri Jaan quickly teamed up with the APD Foundation by beginning a fundraising effort in response to her situation. They were successful in raising ₹30,693 in total. A few more donors made direct contributions of ₹3200.The total sum of ₹33,893 was sufficient to provide immediate relief.

Workers dismantled the decaying structure and rebuilt it on a higher foundation platform with robust wooden supports, reusing some of the previous structure’s parts. The exterior wall was substituted with waterproof PVC sheets. The roof was covered with rubber sheeting from the previous building. There were enough open areas to allow for ventilation. As part of an earlier project, the APD Foundation and Hasiru Dala gave the family solar illumination. The family can now live comfortably in a secure shelter.

“Waste pickers are truly the neglected members of society. They contribute a lot to keeping the city clean and also help the environment by harvesting recyclable materials from waste. They lack social security. Society as a whole should wake up to their cause by undertaking welfare measures for them,” said Abdullah A. Rehman, the founder and CEO of APD Foundation.
