With the assistance of the Inner Wheel Club of Mangaluru North, the Dakshina Kannada Government Higher Primary School in Moodushedde has erected a rainwater harvesting system. This will allow the school to save around 5 million litres of water yearly. Recently, the project was initiated at a 110-year-old school with approximately 191 kids.
This year, according to Inner Wheel Club treasurer Shivani Baliga, club president Vasanthi Kamath wanted to focus on rainwater collecting. Members focused on a school with a vast campus. She stated that rainwater harvesting had been implemented at a cost of Rs 45,000, and that the club would be responsible for its monthly upkeep. Due to a lack of funding, the school’s well is not properly maintained, according to Baliga.
As summer approaches, the well dries up, and the school must make new arrangements. “After filtration, the rainwater collected from the school’s roof is poured directly into the well. This will assist the surrounding areas, as the groundwater table will rise,” she said. The principal, Subrayya Pai, stated that although the school’s rainwater harvesting system was installed a few years ago, it has since stopped functioning due to a lack of maintenance. “We are delighted that it has returned to our campus,” he remarked.
Eggs sponsored for Kindergarten kids
The group is donating eggs to kindergarten pupils at Thiruvail Government Upper Primary School. According to Shivani Baliga, there are approximately 73 KG students at the government school, and they receive eggs once every week. It is a yearly endeavour that will likely be resumed in the next academic year. In addition, the club has financed the education of disadvantaged youngsters, supported the arts, and gave desks and benches to a Bokkapatna government school.
