Sanitary workers who are contracted and outsourced by the urban civic body in Mangaluru, Karnataka, have continued their strike for five days in a row, demanding direct recruitment and payment. As a result, garbage has continued to accumulate at several homes, apartments, and establishments in the city. The workers associated with the maintenance of wet wells, sewage treatment plants, and underground drainages held a meeting with MLA of Mangaluru City South D. Vedavyasa Kamath, Mayor Jayananda Anchan, and the Commissioner.
At the meeting, they agreed to partially resume work while still partially on strike. The workers pledged to resume work after being informed of the difficulties faced by citizens. The Commissioner of the city corporation stated that Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt. Ltd, which manages the solid waste of the city for the civic body, has deployed 85 vehicles for door-to-door waste collection. However, according to the Commissioner, 870 city sanitary workers are currently on strike.
