Water scarcity is looming in the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi in Karnataka, India, towards the end of March. The administrations of both districts have held meetings to manage the situation and have instructed taluk level officers to gather information on areas that may face acute shortages. The zilla panchayats have identified 27 areas that are likely to face water scarcity.
In Udupi, the villages of Karkala, Kundapura, Byndoor, Hebri, Kaup, Brahmavara, and Udupi taluks are expected to be hit hard by the water scarcity. Meanwhile, in Dakshina Kannada, Balepuni, Narikombu, Konaje, Talapady, and Manjanady areas are likely to face shortages.
Currently, tankers are supplying water to some hotels, restaurants, and marriage halls in city areas. However, the zilla panchayats are prioritizing the deepening of borewells and flushing to increase underground water levels instead of supplying water through tankers.
Dr. Kumar, CEO of Udupi’s zilla panchayat, stated that there is no shortage of grants to supply water to rural areas and that separate grants will be given from the 15th Finance Commission. He has also instructed taluk and grama panchayats to effectively manage water resources and prevent hardships to the public.
