Mangaluru Struggles to Cope with Unbearable Heat and Humidity

Coastal districts in India have been experiencing hot and humid weather for the past few days, with no expected relief in sight as the much-needed rain continues to evade the region. The rising temperatures are expected to persist in the coming days, exacerbating the already uncomfortable conditions.

Dakshina Kannada district witnessed particularly scorching temperatures on Tuesday, with the mercury hitting a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26 degrees Celsius – one degree above the usual average for this time of year. While the morning began cloudy, bright sunshine dominated the region for the rest of the day.

Typically, the morning breeze blows from the east and the evening breeze from the west in April. However, due to a whirlwind in the Arabian Sea, the wind is currently blowing from the north, carrying more moisture from the nearby coast and increasing the heat index. Weather experts warn that this can cause further irritation and discomfort.

The meteorological department has not issued a heat wave warning for the coastal region yet, but the average temperature recorded is between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius. Weather officials note that this is not unusual for April. A yellow alert has been declared for the region from April 20 to 22, with rains expected in many places in the twin districts.
