India Becomes World’s Most Populous Country

India has officially become the most populous country in the world, surpassing China, according to data released by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Wednesday. India’s population in 2023 stands at 1.4286 billion (142.86 crore), compared to China’s population of 1.4257 billion (142.57 crore).

However, with a steady population growth and a constant land area, every generation in India is bound to see a decrease in their per capita land share. This raises the question of what the individual land share of every citizen will be in the next 10 years, assuming an equal division of the entire land area among all citizens.

India’s population growth is often referred to as a demographic dividend, but it also presents challenges such as providing adequate resources and infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing population. According to the UNFPA report, the top five countries in terms of population in decreasing order are India, China, the United States, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

As India continues to experience population growth, it will be interesting to see how policymakers address the issue of per capita land share and work to ensure the equitable distribution of resources and opportunities for all citizens.
