“Did you know that Dial 112 is not just a number, but a lifeline for those in need of rescue services?
The Dial 112 Emergency Response Service System (ERSS) was launched by the Union Home Minister and the Minister for Women and Child Development in October 2019, replacing the Dial 100 as the Dial 112 emergency helpline number would provide immediate assistance to services like police (100), fire (101), health (108), women’s safety (1090) and child protection.
From police assistance, medical emergencies to natural disasters, the highly trained professionals will respond 24/7 as an effective emergency response service to help the citizens & keep them safe. The services offered by Dial 112 are:
· Citizens can request help through Voice Call, SOS, SMS, Email, Web Request and Panic buttons.
· Automatic location identification of the caller/victim.
· Dynamic emergency response service from the nearest emergency response vehicle.
· Service from Police, Fire, Medical and Natural Disaster Management Teams.
· Live tracking of emergency response vehicles.
The Dial 112 ERSS facility was available in Dakshina Kannada since November 2020 & In Mangaluru city the services became operational since December 2020. The calls made to Dial 112 are received by personnel at a Public Safety Answering Point who, in turn will ask the nearest ‘Dial 112’ vehicle to respond. There are 19 ‘Dial 112’ vehicles in Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate & the police personnel assigned to ‘Dial 112’ have been meeting people to make them aware of the new facility that is available in the city to serve & help the citizens to keep them safe & aware . ‘112 India’ mobile app is also available on Google Play Store and Apple Store by the Ministry of Home Affairs which provides a special ‘SHOUT’ feature for women and children who need help & that will alert the registered volunteers close to the location of the victim for immediate assistance .
The emergency services can also be accessed online by logging on to the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) website. On the ERSS website, you can either send an emergency email or send an SOS alert to the Emergency Report Centre (ERC).
The women’s safety services include a panic button facility in mobile phones that can be activated by pressing the power button three times. This will immediately alert the emergency services and the caller’s location will be tracked using GPS technology.
The senior citizen safety services provide assistance to senior citizens who are in distress or require medical attention. The service includes providing emergency medical assistance, ambulance services, and escort services to hospitals.
The children’s safety services include a child helpline number (1098) that provides assistance to children who are in need of care and protection. This service is operated by trained professionals who provide counseling and support to children who are victims of abuse, exploitation or neglect.
The Dial 112 helpline is a toll – free number and it can be dialed from any mobile or landline phone in India. The calls to Dial 112 are monitored and tracked to ensure timely and appropriate response to emergencies.
