Vijayanagara To Be Karnataka’s 31st District

On Wednesday, the Karnataka cabinet decided to make Vijayanagara into Karnataka’s 31st district after separating it from the Bellary district. In antiquity, Vijayanagara and its surrounding towns and cities were part of the great Vijayanagara empire. According to the Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, it was a promise to the people of Vijayanagara. While the decision to declare Vijayanagara as Karnataka’s 31st district has been taken, other required decisions like marking boundaries and declaring new taluks will be taken in the next cabinet meeting

At an earlier occasion, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had mentioned that Hospete, Kampli, Hagaribommanahalli, Kottur, Hadagali, and Harapanahalli would be included in the soon-to-be-district of Vijayanagara. He had also expounded that Bellary, Kurugodu, Siraguppa, Sandur, and Kudligi Taluks would continue to be parts of the Bellary district of which the Bellary city would be the headquarter.

As it was becoming difficult for farmers, daily wage laborers, and the poor to travel long distances to get to the Bellary city and also because taking care of the administration of a district like Bellary which has 11 taluks and 11 revenue subdivisions, the government decided it was only right to announce Vijayanagara as the new district, for it would make administration easier while also being a solution to all the traveling problems faced by the people.

Once Vijayanagara fully and officially transforms into a new district, great things are in store for the district especially in the form of tourism at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi which in antiquity was the capital of the mighty Vijayanagara empire.
