Keith Gomes has directed a short film titled Shameless and it can be considered for the 93rd Oscar Awards in the live- action short film category as India’s entry. The 15-minute long short film directed and written by Keith Gomes that falls in the genre black comedy, thriller. The film has Hussain Dalal as the protagonist, who works from home is a person who orders in often. One day, he finds himself trapped beside an apologetic pizza delivery girl played by Sayani Gupta. Rishab Kapoor also plays an important role. The film is produced by Keith Gomes and Sandeep kamal who is a national award winner. The cinematographer is Ovais Khan, editor is Huzefa Lokhandwala and the production designer is Suresh Selvarajan while the art direction is by Amol (Bodake).
The sound designer of the film is Oscar winner Resul Pookuty. Shameless was also the finalist in the third edition of the Best of India Short Film Festival 2020.
Keith and Ashley Gomes, director and producer respectively, are siblings and have a Mangalore connection as their parents Arthur and Cynthia Gomes are from Bejai and completed their education from St. Aloysius College and Ladyhill school respectively.
The short film, Shameless brings into light humans’ dependence on technology, entitlement, humanity and empathy towards those in the migrant class. It also discusses loneliness, insecurity and isolation. Despite the visuals being rather dark both figuratively and literally, a message of hope, humanity and decency is what the film tries to portray.
Producer Ashley Gomes says that he is ecstatic to see the journey his brother has taken. He believes that a film is made not only to entertain but also so that it encourages one to think. The fact that stories such as these, even when it questions social norms, can expand one’s understanding as it has a real social impact. When films make one understand things, it has the power to change one’s perspective and it in turn leads one to action. As a filmmaker, he says, it is one’s dream to hold the Oscar statue, thus the team is extremely thrilled to be making it to the Oscars.
