With a new strain of the corona virus being detected recently in the UK, residents of Karnataka have been uncomfortable at the thought of international travellers coming from the UK bringing the COVID-19 Variant Under Investigation (VUI) into the state. However, residents of Udupi can rest assured as the test results of eight travellers from the UK who entered the country through the Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore and later made their way to Udupi, have returned negative. The test results arrived late on tuesday while the eight persons in question were asked to remain quarantined at their homes with their health being monitored from there for at least 14 days.
According to the DC, authorities at Udupi were notified of the arrival of the aforementioned passengers from the UK by the Commissioner of the Department of Health and Family Welfare. As soon as the news of their arrival was received, health teams arranged for having their swabs collected for running required tests.
Five of the eight passengers came from London, two came from Toronto in Canada and one from Dublin, Ireland. Two passengers are female while the rest five are males. Three of the passengers are from the Karkala Taluk, two from Udupi Town, another two from Brahmawar Taluk and one from Baindoor Taluk.
As the new strain of COVID-19 found in the UK has been said to be more contagious than the already existing one, the authorities are taking all the necessary precautions among which one of the most important is mandating RT-PCR tests for all travellers from London including those transiting in or near the UK, Denmark and the Netherlands.
