Arya Rajendran, a 21 year old, a BSc Mathematics student from Kerala, is a step closer to being the youngest mayor the country has ever had.
The CPI(M) has chosen this 21-year-old as its Mayor candidate after the party’s district committee and state committee sanctioned her candidature. She is the councillor from Mudavanmugal division of Thiruvananthapuram corporation.
This decision can be seen as a step towards having more educated youngsters and women taking a lead role in the politics of the country in the near future. She was standing against Jameela Sreedharan, who is a retired government employee, for this post. But she was chosen unanimously regarding the fact that she is the state president of the “Balasangam”, the party’s children’s wing and also the CPI(M) area committee member.
While several people have criticized this decision of the party when she was proposed to be the mayor, the clarity in her vision and her confidence have proved that she is definitely a deserving candidate. Being an educated woman, she has clear ideas about what changes have to be made in the area, which include waste management, setting up of a Primary Health Centre, etc.
As a student, she plans to continue her studies along with fulfilling her duties, thus being an inspiration to many.
