Around 330 tonnes of dry waste is collected once a week by the Mangaluru Corporation now. The corporation has planned to collect this waste at 4 different locations in the city, instead of carrying this waste to Pachanady dumping yard.
These centres will be located at Surathkal, Mullakad Kavoor, Urwa, and Jeppu Bajal and will receive dry waste from 15 wards each. These centres will be constructed at a cost of 70 lacs and the construction of other two centres will be completed. At present, dry waste is being taken to Panchanady but the accumulating waste is becoming a problem which will only get worse if a solution is not found immediately.
The centres will have units to segregate the waste and the waste will then be compressed into boxes which will be sent for recycling. With an increase in the use of plastics, as everything is packed in plastic due to the pandemic, there is also an increase in the demand from the public to collect the waste twice a week. This is also an issue that the corporation has to find a solution for.
