In response to public reprisal and outcry concerning the government’s decision to restrict movement of private vehicles from 6 am to 10 am during the lockdown from May 10, 2021, the State Director General and Inspector General of Police Praveen Sood, clarified in a tweet around 7 pm on Monday evening that people can use their vehicles to buy daily essentials and food products. However, he added that this facility must be used with discretion and not as a licence for free run every day
The outcry on the part of citizens was a result of police personnel across the state blocking and caning people in markets and public places, seizing vehicles used by them to carry out essential purchases. The lockdown guidelines that banned the use of private vehicles to buy essentials, caused considerable inconvenience to people who lived in remote districts and had to travel 5-10 km to the nearest town to buy essentials.
People thus took to social media to express their anger, grievances and circulate contact numbers of the state human rights commission, urging others to complain against the cops. With these complaints reaching the Vidhana Soudha, opposition leaders attacked the CM over the issue. Soon after, leaders took to social media to show their disapproval over the ban of vehicle use and emphasize on a people-friendly lockdown. The State Director General and Inspector General of Police Praveen Sood, then clarified in a tweet that people will be allowed to use their vehicles to buy daily essentials and food products.
