In an announcement made on Wednesday, the Karnataka government stated that anti-Covid vaccination for the age group 18-44 would be temporarily suspended from May 14, 2021.
A note issued by the Department of Health and Family Welfare stated that the order of the government would be applicable for all government COVID vaccination centres in the state and includes people who have already obtained an appointment.
The government has decided to use the available stock of vaccines (supplied by GoI & procured directly by the state), meant for the vaccination of the age group 18-44, to vaccinate people aged 45 and above, those waiting for their second dose.
The BBMP Chief Commissioner stated that while the state capital is facing a shortage of vaccines, the civic body has decided to prioritize citizens in need of the second dose and aged above 45 years for vaccination.
As per data shared by the Karnataka Health Department, since January 16, 2021, a total of 1.08 crore doses of vaccine has been administered across age groups and priority groups in the state till date with over 85.88 lakh being first doses and 22.93 being second doses. Nevertheless, 70,371 people belonging to the age group 18-44 have been vaccinated in the state so far.
