Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Rai was born in Mangalore into a Tulu speaking bunt family. The world came to know of her when she placed second in the Miss India pageant of 1994 after which she won the Miss World pageant in the same year. She debuted as an actress in the 1997 Tamil movie Iruvar after which she got her shot at her first bollywood film which was Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya also shot in the year 1997. She was honored with the Padma Shri by the government of India in 2009 and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in the year 2012. She has also won two Filmfare awards

Anushka Shetty

Originally from the Bellipady Uramalu Guthu family, Anushka Shetty is a true Tuluva who went on to achieve great success in the Telugu and Tamil film industries. It was in the 2005 Telugu film super that Anushka debuted as an actress. She made her debut in the Tamil film industry with the film Lakshyam which was released in the year 2007. It was in the 2009 film of Arundhati that Anushka played two roles simultaneously for the first time in her life. She received critical acclaim for her acting in this film which eventually led to her winning the Filmfare best actress award for the first time. She has been nominated for the Filmfare awards a total of eight times and won thrice. She has also won the Nandi Award and CineMAA award for best actress. Her role in the Bahubali series earned her the title of becoming the highest paid south Indian actress.

Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty is a well known name in almost every Indian household. The actress made her debut in the bollywood film Baazigar which was released in the year 1993 which earned her a Filmfare award nomination for best supporting actress. Apart from acting she has also played a significant role in reality television by being a judge for the dance reality shows of Jhalak Dikhla Ja (2006), Zara Nachke Dikha (2010), Nach Baliye (2012-14) and Super Dancer (2016 – present).

Shamita Shetty

Born on the 2nd of February 1979 in Mangalore, Karnataka Shamita Shetty is Shilpa Shetty’s younger sister as well as a bollywood actress and interior designer. She won the IIFA award for star debut of the year for her film Mohabbatein in the year 2000. She has also made appearances in and participated in Big Boss (2009), Jhalak Dikhla Ja (2015) and Fear Factor: Khathron Ke Khiladi (2019). 

Suneil Shetty

Hailing from Mulki, a town in Mangalore, Suneil Shetty is a film actor, producer and an entrepreneur. He has acted predominantly in Bollywood movies. He began his career with the 1992 film Balwaan. In Balwaan, as well as in the films that followed in the 1990s Shetty chose to act in action films. From the early 2000s he began to appear in films that starred multiple actors and which also belonged to a wider array of genres. He owns a production company by the name of Popcorn Entertainment Private Limited. Some of the films he has worked on as part of this company are Khel-No Ordinary Game, Rakht and Bhagam Bhag. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Villain for his role in the film Dhadkan in the year 2001.

Pooja Hegde

Even though she was born and brought up in the city of Mumbai, in Maharashtra, Hegde’s parents are both from Mangalore. Thus her mother tongue is Tulu. She was the second runner up in the Miss Universe India Pageant of 2010. She made her debut through the Tamil film Mugamoodi in the year 2012. She has also acted in Telugu Films some of which are Oka Laila Kosam and Mukunda. She made her Bollywood debut with the film Mohenjo Daro in which she starred alongside Hrithik Roshan. She has also acted in various other Tamil, Telugu and Hindi movies.

Sneha Ullal

Unlike the other celebrities on this list, Sneha Ullal is not completely from Mangalore as her mother is Sindhi while her father speaks Tulu and is from Mangalore. It was with the Hindi movie Lucky: No Time for Love in the year 2005 that Ullal made her debut as an actress. She immediately gained popularity for sharing likeliness with Aishwarya Rai. She has also acted in Telugu movies and in fact her debut Telugu film, Ullasamga Utsahamga, which went on to be a huge blockbuster hit. After the release of her first Telugu movie was received well, she went on to act in various other Telugu movies. She then made her return to Bollywood with the film Kaash….Mere Hote.
