Hasiru Dala and APD Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ullal City Municipal Corporation to set up Dakshina Kannada’s first Dry Waste Collection Centre(DWCC) in Ullal.
On Gandhi Jayanthi, Hasiru Dala and APD Foundation, which are in partnership since 2019, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ullal City Municipal Corporation(CMC) in an effort to set up Dakshina Kannada’s first Dry Waste Collection Centre(DWCC) in Ullal. The commissioner of Ullal CMC, Rayappa is the signatory of the MoU. Mohammed Nawazuddin, a waste sorter, is the operator of the DWCC. The project facilitators will be Hasiru Dala or APD Foundation. This model of the DWCC is based on the ones in Bangalore which have been functional since 2013-2014.
The MoU states that Ullal CMC will facilitate infrastructure for collection, processing and storage of waste which is dry and reusable. The project facilitators will supply technical support and monitor and train wherever necessary. Nawazuddin and other waste sorters will take the responsibility of running the DWCC everyday. The initiative was set to begin from October 2, 2020. This MoU is valid for three years and could also be renewed.
In its first ever introduction in Dakshina Karnataka, the DWCC aims to be a solution to the problem of waste collection in Ullal which collects around 18 tonnes of waste per day which constitutes 4- 5 tonnes of dry waste. Hasiru Dala / ADP Foundation has worked for more than 10 months on this project after conducting surveys to understand solid waste management there as well as the number of waste pickers in the region.
The waste collectors will work in the DWCC centre. The dry waste that is collected will be sent to recyclers. The former will earn their living from the money generated from selling the recyclables. The expansion of the facility will be facilitated from the surplus generated.
