Delay in Construction of New Platforms at Mangaluru Central Railway Station Causes Frustration Among Residents

Construction work on two new platforms, Platform No. 5 and 6, at the Mangaluru Central Railway Station has abruptly stopped despite being approved in the 2016-17 Railway budget and receiving funding of ₹4.76 crore in the 2023-24 budget. The work status as of April 19, 2023, is the same as it was in November 2022, which has caused frustration among residents.

The new platforms would have significantly improved train handling capacity at the Central, and it would have fulfilled long-standing demands to extend multiple express trains to the station. However, the delay in completing the project suggests a lack of attention and care towards Mangaluru by the Palakkad Division and the Southern Railway. At present, the Mangaluru Central Railway Station has three platforms that manage approximately 27 departures and arrivals. The addition of two new platforms would have opened up the possibility of introducing more trains to Mumbai and other parts of Karnataka directly from the station.
