The Karnataka Assembly has passed an amendment to the Karnataka Police Act, 1963, that intends to prohibit and restrict online gaming. According to the Chief Minister, the proposal does not apply to online games that strictly adhere to the game of skills. According to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), which represents eight core traders and 40,00 trade associations, the Bill does not distinguish between a “game of skill” and a “game of chance.” It stated that the Game of Chance is nothing more than gambling and should be prohibited.

According to the CAIT, the Bill will also encourage illegal offshore gambling and betting apps that operate in gray markets. It requested that the Karnataka government review the Bill and recommend a stable regulatory framework for online skill games.

The state Home Minister introduced the Karnataka Police (Amendment) Bill, 2021 in the Karnataka assembly. It comes after several complaints about cyber fraud were received by the state government.
