Mangalore: Unique campaign to foster reading

For over a week, many people have been seen spending time at the ‘Nest of Books,’ which is adjacent to the bus stop in Ulaibettu village, Mangalore Taluk, before boarding buses to the city. This nest also includes a variety of magazines and short storybooks in addition to newspapers. As per the panchayat president, this attempt to develop the habit of reading has received a favorable reaction. Since October 2, book nests, also known as ‘Pustakada Goodu,’ have appeared in 17-gram panchayats across Dakshina Kannada. In 27 minutes, book nests will appear.

The proposal was proposed by Dakshina Kannada ZP CEO, who claimed that these nests are being created to allow peasants to spend some time throughout the day reading books and magazines. People can read at the nest, or they can take the book with them and return it a few days later. These nests were built by panchayats with the help of development money and local donations. The panchayats have bought some books and are obtaining more from individuals. The ZP and the Deputy Director of Public Instruction in the Udupi district have teamed together to organize an ‘Akshara Joolige’ (literary carry bag) initiative to collect excess books in the area. These will be utilized in school libraries or panchayath libraries.

DDPI, Udupi, mentioned that once a week, instructors go around the school with a purse collecting books for the students to read. Some of the donors have stepped forward on their own to contribute books. A guy from Kunjibettu village gave 20 old books, which is among those who have donated books. They personally went to his residence to get the books. The Haleangadi Gram Panchayat staff have built a shelter near the panchayat office where people may read the books.
