Mangaluru: Nitin Vas invents an eco-friendly mask

The second wave of coronavirus has increased the demand for face masks and their disposal has been a major cause of worry ever since. Because these used masks reach the ocean and landfills, thus polluting the water bodies and the environment. Whilst many individuals use reusable masks, the social activist Nitin Vas from Karnataka produces masks that may be reused in a different way. The public has been drawn to a young city dweller who has created environmentally friendly masks. Plant seeds are placed in this mask, which develops into a plant even after use.

Nitin Vas, the founder of Paper Seed, a social enterprise, and his organization have created a cotton rag mask containing Tulsi and tomato seeds. So far, this team has made and sold about 3000 such masks and they just cost Rs. 25/-. The type of environmentally friendly materials used to make these masks will not hurt the planet at all and also act as the first line of defense against the virus. It is basically made of recycled rags and the inner linings are made of cotton cloth. These eco-friendly masks are thick enough to prevent infection. They are durable and degradable too, but might not be as soft as the surgical masks available at medical shops. So the most important thing to remember is to conserve Mother Nature and contribute to it in any way that we can.
