The state of Karnataka recorded about 17 lakh infections during the second wave of the pandemic between late March and early June. About four lakh people or 23.8% of the total belonged to the age group of 30-39 years. The number of cases recorded between June 8 and August 8 was two lakh, out of which about 43,000 people were from the same age group.
The state witnessed 2,792 fresh cases from March 29 from which the daily cases increased and crossed 10,000 on April 14. After the date, the daily number of cases dropped steadily till June 8. However, the date marked another turnaround in the progression of the spread of disease. The number of daily cases has dropped after August 8.
The health department has stated that it is the youngsters who are more prone to get infected as they are mostly outdoors due to work. This exposes these individuals to the virus. It is estimated that in Karnataka the people in their 30s have been mostly affected by the pandemic. This age group accounted for most of the infections during the second wave. The spread head manager of the pandemic in Karnataka told that the youngsters must follow covid appropriate behavior. He added that the government cannot enforce rules until people are ready to follow. It has been noticed that unlike the first wave, where the senior citizens were affected it is the younger who have become prone to the infection during the second wave.
The age group between 20-40 needs to be fully vaccinated at the earliest to curb the further spread of infections. He also said that as of now free vaccinations to this group are restricted to priority groups while this needs to be made available to all the people in this category. They must make sure that all people of this age group receive at least one dose of vaccination before the second wave hits.
As per the report on August 9, out of 3.2 crores, people belonging to this age group in the state about 35% or 1.1 crores have been vaccinated. The fatality rate of individuals in this age group remains low, about 0.1% to 0.3 %. However, people in the category of above 5o years of age had a fatality rate of 2% to 20%. It is estimated that if the third wave hits, this age group will face the burn.
