It has been noted that recent weddings held in the last one month in Dakshina Kannada have led to a major spike in COVID-19 cases in the district, with many attendees testing positive.
In a wedding organized on April 25, 2021, the groom’s father tested positive a few days following the event, was admitted to the ICU and later discharged. Guests and family members in a wedding hosted in event tested positive while guests who attended a other wedding held in the first week of April suffered a similar fate. In a wedding hosted in their house, an elderly couple in Vamanjoor tested positive as well.
Wedding planners, photographers and musicians who were a part of these events contracted the virus too. A musician in a well-known band tested positive along with his wife and three-year-old daughter and the family is now on the road to recovery. In December, a couple who tied the knot in Kerala and returned to Kadaba tested positive as well.
Considering that weddings and large gatherings function as superspreaders and prevent the curbing of the virus, Deputy Commissioner K V Rajendra stated that the district administration has decided to prohibit wedding functions from May 15, 2021. He added that the decision will be relooked at in the coming days, depending on the caseload.
