Mangalore: The road where Padma Shri awardee Hajabba sold orange to be named after him

Harekala Hajabba, a Padma Shri awardee, who used to sell oranges all along the main road in Mangaluru’s Dakshina Kannada district, will be named after him. The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has passed a resolution naming the route connecting Hamilton Circle and Rao and Rao Circle in the city after Harekala Hajabba, who was awarded for building a government school in his hometown.

The MCC will submit a proposal to the city corporation’s Town Planning Standing Committee to rename Hamilton Circle to Rao and Rao Circle to ‘Padma Shri Harekala Hajabba Raod.” A proposal has been submitted by a corporator from congress.

Harekala Hajabba has started a school in Mangaluru by selling oranges. Even when he was carrying a basket of oranges on his head, Hajabba had the goal of building a school. He realized his goal of ensuring that none of his village’s children remained uneducated.

The proposal will be sent to the government when the Town Planning Standing Committee accepts it, as per the mayor. Before submitting the recommendation to the government, the standing committee will follow the 2009 government orders to complete the process.
