Karnataka is expected to get a first-of-its-kind youth development index, which would record the level of their education, health, and mental well-being, among other things. Once implemented, the Youth Development Index (YDI) will encompass the 15–29 age range, and once implemented, it might serve as a proxy indicator for the state’s development, which is now exclusively assessed by GDP. A government-appointed group to establish Karnataka’s Youth Policy is undertaking discussions on the index, with a development expected by April 2022.
The idea is being tested by the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur. Education, health, emotional status, contribution to the economy, and potential livelihood opportunities are among the parameters that will be considered for the youth index.
The new policy will look into changes in the school sector as a result of the pandemic, as well as their mental health. Aspects such as utilizing the sharing economy and capitalizing on new technology like artificial intelligence will be taken into account. The committee will suggest a measurement and reporting process led by the Chief Minister, who would evaluate it yearly to ensure policy implementation. It will also recommend a six-month review by the youth affairs minister and a quarterly review by the additional chief secretary.
