Nestled next to a broad and beautiful coastline, the city of Mangalore is famous for its cuisine, especially seafood. One of the advantages of living really close to the sea is access to abundant sea food of various kinds.

Seafood is a must try when one comes to Mangalore and one of the best restaurants to go to would be the Janatha Lunch Home, a family restaurant, located on Falnir Road, near Highlands Hospital, in Kankanady, Mangalore. Some of their signature dishes include Chicken Puli Munchi, Silver Fish Rawa Fry, Bondas Golden Fry, Anjal (Kingfish) Tawa Fry and many more. The restaurant has your parking covered with a wide parking area and gives off a homely feel. The restaurant remains open every day from 12 to 3 30 in the afternoon and from 7 to 10 30 in the evening. One can also drive in after 5 P M for snacks. Here are some of our best picks from the menu –

  • Chicken Sukka is a very popular dish of the Janatha Lunch Home and is generally a very popular dish in Mangalore.  It is made of chicken native to Mangalore and Udupi. The word Sukka has been derived from the Hindi word ‘Sukha’ which means ‘to be dry’. It can be served both without gravy and with a little bit of gravy. The main ingredients include chicken – as the name suggests – along with grated coconut and red chilies. It is known by many names, like Kori Sukka and Kori Ajadina.
  • The Anjal or kingfish Tawa Fry is another extremely popular dish. It is made by marinating the pieces of fish in a paste made of chili powder, some salt, a little bit of ginger garlic paste, lemon juice and water. Once the masala sets in, it is fried and served hot on a banana leaf. The sight of it is enough to make one’s mouth water and now you can guess why it must be so popular.
  • Another delicious and popular item on the menu is the Squid Golden Fry which is deep fried squid made using bread crumbs, eggs, maida, vinegar and much more. it is served crispy and is definitely a must-try.
  • If you love prawns then the Prawn Ghee Roast is the dish for you. The combination of juicy prawns with the spicy masala and slight sweetness of jiggery will leave you wanting more, so don’t forget to try the prawns ghee roast.
  • While we are all familiar with the sweet and sour combination, the Pulimunchi Gravy takes our taste buds to a different world with its tamarind and spices combination. This Mangalorean dish is especially known for its tangy flavor and is often accompanied by chicken or fish.
  • Last but not the least it is time for us to mention that which every south Indian has a soft spot for – Neer dosa!  This is nothing but soft crepes made from rice batter and can be consumed with practically any curry.

So the next time you are in Mangalore and crave some spicy and sweet seafood, be sure to make your way to Janatha Lunch Home and leave with a heavy and full stomach along with a light wallet!
