The Karnataka government has reversed its intention to make Kannada compulsory for undergraduate students. The judgment was made in light of an interim order issued by the High Court in this case. With the latest decision, students who do not wish to learn the local language will not be obliged to do so until the Karnataka High Court issues additional directions.
On January 21, a circular was sent to all vice presidents and registrars of public and private universities. In addition, principles of both aided and unaided colleges have been given instructions in this respect. On August 7, 2021, the state government declared Kannada studies mandatory for students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in the state. The directive is following the National Education Policy’s execution (NEP).
The Karnataka High Court has ruled that students who do not wish to take the Kannada language test shall not be compelled to pursue it. The Samskrita Bharati (Karnataka) Trust, other three organizations, and five students have filed petitions challenging the government order.
