The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is planning to give an ayurvedic touch to rejuvenate lakes and the process is at the drafting stage. Mangaluru Urban Development Authority chairman Ravishankar Mijar said MCC has adopted the Delhi model to rejuvenate lakes using Ayurveda, the MCC authorities have obtained permission from their Delhi counterparts for the same.
“We have reached out to the officials of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for suggestions and guidance to use the traditional and cheaper ayurvedic methods, which have reportedly been proven successful for the treatment and rejuvenation of large water bodies. It has been reported that the Delhi Development Authority is using ‘cownomics’, based on ayurvedic principles, and attempts are being made to rejuvenate the lakes there. Several experiments have been made across India, and through the DDA, we have reached out to several companies in the business. Through the Mangaluru City Corporation, we could probably invite the experts for a demonstration,” he said.
Mijar said that the lake and pond rejuvenation works are going on in full swing. “Already works on nearly eight ponds and lakes are complete and work on eight more are in progress. We will soon start work on another five water bodies,” he said.
Two lakes have already been inaugurated and a few more will be inaugurated soon. development of a walking track is being tried if there is space as an aim to improve the groundwater table in Mangaluru city.
MUDA has drawn plans to develop gardens for which works will begin soon that is aiming to increase the green cover and protect the water bodies within the existing system, wherever facing a shortage of space, there will be introduced Miyawaki gardens.” A total of six parks in areas including SL Mathias Road, Bejai, Karangalpady, near the Central Warehouse, Surathkal and Ballalbhag have been identified for development
