Union minister for highways Nitin Gadkari came up with the rule that toll gates which are within 5 to 10 km within city limits and within 60 km on highways are illegal. The highway department has prepared a list of 181 such toll gates all over the country and sent them to
the highways ministry.
Karnataka leads to be 2nd in the country with 18 toll gates that violate rule 8 of highway toll. Out of this 10 toll gates are built within 50 to 59 km of another toll gate. The rest nine are even worse with a distance of just 11 to 35 km from another toll gate.
The distance between Hejmady and Surathkal toll gates is just 11 km, Talapady-Surathkal is 32 km, Hejamady-Gundmi is 49 km, and Sastan-Shiroor is 59 km, Holegadde-Belakeri is 49 km and between Kulumepalya-Bengaluru is 12 km.
Also, the distance between Talapady and Hejmady toll gates is just 43 km. The toll gates built by Navyug company on NH 66 have not maintained the required distance of 60 km. Most toll gates that violate the norm are in Uttar Pradesh followed by Karnataka.
