The Dakshina Kannada district administration has warned officials and the public to be cautious as there are possibility of dengue spreading during the monsoon.
Deputy commissioner K V Rajendra has directed officials of the health and other departments to take measures to prevent the spread of the vector-borne disease. Health staff, including ASHA workers, have been asked to conduct door-to-door visits, and take measures for mosquito source reduction.
More cases of vector-borne diseases are being reported from the Bunder and fishing port area in the city said DC at a meeting of health and other department officials on Friday. “Stagnant water in fishing boats and surrounding areas in ports, contributes to the breeding of mosquitoes. The fisheries department and boat owners should take up measures to spray larvicide in those areas,” the DC added.
Health and education department officials have been directed to check school premises, and prevent the stagnation of water there. Similarly, the women and child development department has been given the task of keeping all anganwadi premises clean, and free from mosquito breeding sources. Indoor residual spraying should be done in all residential schools and hostels of the social welfare department, he directed.
The DC also issued an advisory for owners of all stone quarries in the district, to take precautions against vector-borne diseases. The department of mines and geology has been directed to ensure that guppy fish are released in all unused quarry pits in the district, and thereby prevent mosquito breeding. Meanwhile, the PWD officials are directed to monitor work sites of the Mangaluru Smart City Limited, he said.
Rajendra insisted that people, especially pregnant women, children and the elderly, should use mosquito nets or repellents while sleeping. “Cooperate with health and ASHA workers, who will be visiting houses for larva survey. Consult a doctor immediately, if fever, headache, aches and pain in the eyes, typically behind the eyes, muscle, joint, or bone pain is experienced, and vomiting happens, and if rashes develop on the body.”
