Guidelines Given By The Health Ministry On Monkeypox

The Indian Ministry of Health has established recommendations for the treatment of monkeypox. Although no cases of the virus have really been confirmed in India, rumours of its spread in non-endemic nations have prompted the government to offer instructions.

What are the guidelines?

The 23-page report, which can be found on the Ministry of Health’s website, is an information sheet that details the disease’s global prevalence as of May 31, as well as its epidemiology or disease characteristics, such as the type of virus that causes it, its probable origins, early-onset, how long before symptoms appear, and so on.

What is the global prevalence of monkeypox?

According to the World Health Organization, outbreaks of monkeypox have been confirmed in 12 member states where the virus is not endemic. So yet, there have been no confirmed travel ties to endemic areas. Cases were primarily, but not exclusively, men who have sex with men (MSM) seeking care in primary care and sexual health clinics, according to the publicly available information.

Availability of vaccines

Vaccination against smallpox has been found to protect against monkeypox in the past. While a vaccination (MVA-BN) and a specialised therapy (tecovirimat) for monkeypox were authorized in 2019 and 2022, they aren’t generally available. Smallpox vaccination is supposed to protect against monkeypox, but only in those over 40-50 years old who have been injected with the smallpox vaccine, and it’s unknown how long the immunity lasts in this case.
