If education and degrees indicate the sublime nature of knowledge, employment and self-employment determine the skill and competence of life. Our lives included dairy farming in full. Now, the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA programme is pushing many youth to start raising goats, pigs, and chickens.
Wilson Monis, a BCom graduate who is the son of a farmer Mr. Dennis Monis. Wilson had left his job in a Bangalore clothing factory and had moved back to his family home in Panekkal of Nada village in the Belthangady taluk. He is now receiving assistance from the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA programme to launch his own business and work for himself.
With the aid of the MNREGA programme and after investing Rs 2 lacs there, Wilson, who owns a 2-acre agricultural plot of land, built a shed. At first, he purchased 11 Yorkshire piglets from the Koyala Animal Husbandry and Cattle Development Center in Kadaba taluk for Rs 3,500 each.
He found success in this line of work since pigs are in high demand and may fetch prices of Rs 120–140 per kilogram. Up to this point in 2019–20, MNREGA has provided support for 1241 cattle sheds, 50 goat sheds, 119 chicken houses, and 29 pig sheds.
“Initially, I started with rearing 11 piglets. One of the pigs gave birth to 8 piglets and another gave birth to 7 piglets taking the total to 17 piglets. I have sold nine of the pigs that I had bought initially. I am now thinking of rearing goats,” stated by Wilson Monis.
