What makes Diwali even more special is that this glittering festival continues for five consecutive days- Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdasi, Lakshmi Puja (Diwali), Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj/Bali Padyami 2022. This year, the Diwali celebration starts with Dhanteras on Sunday, October 23 and ends with Bhai Dooj on Thursday, October 27. The Lakshmi Puja is the most auspicious of Diwali festival days and is celebrated as the day of Diwali. Hence, Diwali 2022 falls on Monday, October 24.
The word Diwali means rows of lighted lamps. Diwali is known as the ‘festival of lights because houses, shops and public places are decorated with small earthenware oil lamps called diyas.
All of this requires numerous excursions to stores and marketplaces, which is what everyone is occupied with. While the majority of Mangaloreans have completed their purchase of clothing, jewellery, and gifts, many are still making spur-of-the-moment purchases. For Diwali, many stores in city malls are offering special discounts. Firecrackers are a necessary component of Diwali shopping for kids and young people.
Diwali is not only a time for joy and celebration, but it is also a time for serious buying, which encourages both men and women to go out and do a lot of shopping. Indians, notably Mangaloreans, are known for doing the most Diwali shopping to make the celebration genuinely memorable for oneself, whether it be for clothing, jewellery, electronics, appliances for the home, fireworks, or house decorations. Furthermore, individuals continue to be in celebratory and joyful spirits as soon as Diwali celebrations begin, which leads them to make more purchases than they would on other days.
A ritual that also boosts the amount of purchasing during the holiday is exchanging gifts with family, friends, and strangers.
Once again, throughout this festival season, Chinese-made goods prevail. The bazaar is bursting with things for home decoration in honour of the Diwali celebration. Chinese items are luring many consumers due to their lower prices and appealing appearance, which is putting domestic products at a disadvantage. Notably, different kinds of home decor items have been lined up in stores to capitalise on the festive attitude of people as they adorn their homes fervently on the day of the festival of light.
Jewelers are also showcasing fresh collections of gold, silver, and diamond jewellery in an effort to entice customers once more during the festival.
People all around India enjoy celebrating the holiday of Diwali with great fervour. Numerous diyas, candles, and multi coloured light bulbs flood the moonless night on the day of Diwali, creating an enthralling display of colour, light, energy, and enthusiasm.
