Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have received thanks from Nalin for responding to the petitions. “The toll gate would be closed, as the union minister promised earlier.” “But the technological component is now in place,” he wrote in the tweet.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel had planned to close the toll gate on November 7.The Horata Samiti at the Surathkal Toll Gate had issued a warning about escalating the protest as the deadline approached.

The samithi’s members had been yelling nonstop to have the Surathkal toll gate removed. As part of the protest, the samithi held a “Toll Gate Chalo” from Hejamady to the Surathkal toll gate on March 22, and a demonstration on September 13 in which the samithi threatened to lay siege to the Surathkal toll gate on October 18.

On October 18, a huge crowd of protesters assembled and broke through the police roadblock. A number of leaders were detained.
