Traffic offenders can now pay their fines at city post offices. A collaborative initiative in this regard was launched on Monday, November 14, by the Mangaluru City Police and the Mangaluru Division of the Department of Posts.
In order to establish the ability to pay traffic fines under the jurisdiction of the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate at post offices, police commissioner N Shashikumar and Shriharsha N, senior superintendent of post offices, Mangaluru postal division, inked an agreement.
Through this programme, those who violate the law can pay the fine and have their cars released without having to appear in court.
“Today we have released the posters of the payment for traffic violations that can be made at any post office in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. This system has made it easy for people to pay traffic violation fines. Payment can be made at the post office counters in cash or through QR code scanning, according to Police Commissioner Shashi Kumar in a press release.
“At present, the facility of paying fines for traffic violations under the jurisdiction of Mangaluru Police Commissionerate is available only online and at 4 local traffic police stations (Traffic East Police Station, Kadri; Traffic West Police Station, Pandeshwar; Traffic North Police Station, Surathkal; and Traffic South Police Station, Nagori); and 4 Mangaluru One Centers (Mallikatte, Lalbagh, Bavutagudde, and Surathkal). “However, this facility will now be extended to all Karnataka head and sub-post offices,” Shriharsha said in a statement.
“Nowadays, information about traffic rule violating vehicles is instantly available through the automation center, which was started to control those who don’t wear helmets, seat belts, triple ride, and those who drive with defective number plates,” Shriharsha continued.Due to this, notices are being issued to the owners of those vehicles that have violated the traffic rules. A fine has to be paid by the owner of such vehicles within seven days of the notice.
If a vehicle registered in any other city of Karnataka comes to Mangaluru and violates the traffic rules, a notice will be sent to them. Since it is very difficult for them to come to Mangaluru and pay the fine, they should enable such vehicle owners to pay the fine at the nearest post office. “Henceforth, fines for violations of traffic rules under the jurisdiction of the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate can be paid by cash or through QR code scanning at 1702 departmental post offices in Karnataka, including 126 post offices in Dakshina Kannada and 62 in Udupi District.
Fines for traffic offences collected at post offices using the ePayment service will be instantly forwarded online to the Mangaluru City Police system via an API connection. Details of the appropriate service fees for this office-provided amenity are as follows:
For traffic violation fees of Rs 1,000, Rs 1,001–2,500, Rs 2501–5000, and above Rs 5,000, the service fees (including GST) will be Rs 10, Rs 15, Rs 20, and Rs 25, respectively.
Shriharsha further said, “To pay the traffic violation fee at the post offices, the customer has to bring the traffic violation fine challan.” However, if it is not brought, the customer can give the registration number of the vehicle that violated the traffic rules and pay the penalty fee. If more than one notice has been issued to the vehicle owner for violating the traffic rules, and if the customer does not bring his old notice or has lost it, he can obtain the details of such notices from post offices by giving the vehicle registration number and paying the penalty fee for all or some of the outstanding notices.
Apart from this, customers can check at the post offices whether there is any penalty charge on the vehicles at the time of sale, which can be paid immediately.
This service will be available at Karnataka’s 1702 departmental Post Offices from November 14, and clients are encouraged to take advantage of it, according to the announcement.
DCP: Law and Order Anshu Kumar, ACP Traffic Geetha Kulkarni, Shriharsha, IPoS Senior Superintendent of Post Office Mangaluru Division, and Shrinath N. B., Assistant Superintendent of Post Offices, Mangaluru, were among those in attendance.
