Santhosh D Andrade’s painting ‘The Storytelling Wall: The Fallacies of Urbanisation’ wins ORA 2020, India’s biggest online art contest.
Santhosh D Andrade, an artist based Mangalore has won the ORA 2020 which was an all India online art contest conducted by Mojita, Santhosh D Andrade, an artist based in Mangalore has won the ORA 2020 which was an all India online art contest conducted by Mojarta, an NDTV venture. ‘The Storytelling Wall: The Fallacies of Urbanisation’ was the name of his award winning painting. Due to the alarming situation of the pandemic, the results were announced online and he has received Rs. 3,00,000 along with his winning trophy and certificate on September 25,2020.
With a career in art spanning over 15 years, Andrade has won the contest in the Professional Artist category that had over 1000 other contestants. He had to fight tooth and nail in order to win this contest which had many talented artists contesting as well. The contest was judged by artists Arpana Caur, Brinda Miller, R M Palaniappan, sculptor Latika Katt, art historian Mitchell S Crites and Priya Pall, curatorial director of Bikaner House.
In his concept note, Santhosh D Andrade explains that when he thinks about his childhood, memories of his hometown Mangalore come flooding by; the tiled rooftops in between the vegetable gardens, the hills overlooking the Arabian Sea, all in the arms of nature. But as years passed by, when he looked outside his window, harsh realities of urbanisation have changed many two tier cities from the ground upward. His painting depicts the overlapping of these two phases, the old and the new. The tiled rooftops in Mangalore in his painting are choked by the high rise buildings that are built close to them. The staircase tries to depict man’s urge to always climb higher, seldom, with any intention of climbing down. The circular staircase winds into the skies and takes the one who climbs far away from being grounded.
