Vehicle registration surge owing to fear of communal spread of Corona virus

In April 2020, the Regional Transport office(RTO) situated in Mangalore registered a total of 26 four- wheeler vehicles and almost 40 applications were received by the RTO. They registered 49 two-wheelers and now they receive an increased number of 100-120 applications per day.

Mangaluru Regional Transport Officer, opies that the increase in the numbers is due to the fear of spread of Corona virus that makes people weary of travelling by public transport and encouraging them to buy private vehicles. Those citizens especially those who are habitants of the outskirt regions  of Mangalore prefer to travel by two- wheelers. In addition to fear, there is also an acute shortage of buses that ply to rural areas due to bus owners’ fear of incurring losses which makes travel even more difficult in times like these.

In March 2020, Mangaluru RTO registered 572 light motor vehicles(LMV) and 1732 two wheelers indicated the data from Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH). After the nationwide lockdown was imposed, registrations of vehicles had steeply reduced to 26 LMVs and 49 two- wheelers. Ever since September 2020 however, registrations have increased significantly.
