Mangaluru city is all set to welcome a 12.4 km-long cycling route under the Smart City Mission. With a funding of ₹ 6.1 crore by The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), under the Urban Development Department, the project will be materialized by Mangaluru Smart City Ltd. (MSCL) estimated within a duration of six months from now.
The project plan envisions a structure that would facilitate routes of 8.3 Kms to pass through different lanes while the main road is to consist of a 4.1 km route. Covering various areas like University College, Income Tax Office, Roshni Nilaya, Father Muller Hospital, SDM Law College, Canara College, Sharada Vidyalaya, St. Joseph’s College, Highland Hospital, Expert Tutorials, BEM School, Town Hall, Central Market, Car Street Flower Market, Canara High School, Mphasis, Marnamikatta, Attavar, Manipal School, Central Railway Station, St. Rita’s School, Cascia High School and so on, the routes will be marked beginning at Bolara Boat Repair Yard and concluding at TMA Pai Convention Centre, MG Road.
The ambitious project will connect almost 26 educational institutions, namely Milagres College, Shree Devi College, Besant Women’s College, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Premakanthi College of Education, St. Mary’s School along with others, and 20 public buildings including Mini Vidhana Soudha, Government Wenlock Hospital, MESCOM Attavar, Government Lady Goschen Hospital and so on.
The cycling routes passing through lanes will not allow four-wheeler movement while main roads will have special cycling routes. All the routes will be painted and contain appropriate sign boards. Mangaluru city and its residents are thus well-prepared to embrace and promote cycling.
