Due to heavy rain, the Maravoor Bridge, which connects the city to the international airport, developed a crack on the afternoon of Monday 14 June. In the initial times, when the bridge was built, it fell to roughly three feet deep and remained precarious while traveling from Mangaluru City to Bajpe airport. As the coastal regions have been rushing through constant rain for three days, only on one side was water streaming out of the above dam.
The locals believe a crack occurred as a result of sand mining beneath the Gurpur River bridge. In three years, this is the second bridge in the district that has collapsed. The bridge is forbidden for traffic and pedestrian movement for now. People should work together since vehicle movement on the bridge is limited.
The traffic to the airport was disrupted due to the collapse. The collapse is believed to have occurred on Tuesday, June 15 at approximately 2.30 in the morning. Traffic will be routed to two other roads. Those who want to go to another side of the Marvoor bridge from Kavoor can either use the Kavoor-Kulur-KBS Jokatte-Porkody-Bajpe route or the Pacchanady-Vamanjoor-Gurpur-Kaikamba-Bajpe route. “Two Maravors Bridge, linking the Phalguni River to Bajpe Airport, has collapsed,” said the police commissioner who examined the site. Since then, both vehicle and pedestrian movements have not been adequate. The Udupi-Mulky-Kinnigoli-Kateel-Bajpe route should convey passengers from Udupi to the airport, whereas the Nanthoor-Vamanjoor-Gurupur-Kaikamba-Bajpe route should be taken by the Kasargod and Mangaluru people.
