Fishing season in Karnataka coastal districts is set to resume from Today

Fishing activities will resume across coastal regions Today after the 61-day fishing restriction ends on July 31. The government had outlawed fishing between June 1 and July 31 under the Karnataka Coastal Fishing (Regulation) Act, 1986, because the monsoon is the spawning season for fish. The prohibition is in place to make it easier for fish to reproduce in the water. Fishermen and laborers prepared nets and fishing boats at the fishing port at Old Port in Mangaluru, which was bustling with activity.

Even though the fishing season begins on Sunday, not all boats will go deep-sea fishing, according to fishing leaders. Full-scale fishing will be hampered by the Covid-19 epidemic, market uncertainty, fishermen failing to obtain their diesel passbook to obtain discounted diesel for boats, and other issues.

As per the fishermen’s leader, the Dakshina Kannada district has 80 purse seine boats and 1,200 trawler boats. Workers from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Jharkhand work on these deep-sea fishing vessels. Many boat owners had not yet received their passbooks, which allowed them to take advantage of the discounted diesel. We won’t be able to buy diesel at market pricing without the passbook.

On deep sea trips, a fishing boat requires 6,500 liters of fuel. Every month, the fishermen receive roughly 9,000 gallons of discounted diesel. After performing prayers at Urwa Mariyamma Temple on August 6, a few trawl boats will sail into the sea. Fishermen’s leaders, on the other hand, stated that after doing worship on August 8, they will go deep-sea fishing. In 2020-21, the fish harvest was 1,39,714.04 tonnes worth Rs 1,924 crore, compared to 1,79,944 tonnes worth Rs 2,031 crore in 2019-20.
