To prevent the antiquated practice from spreading, the Kerala Governor has proposed that students sign a dowry bond before enrolling in college, similar to the anti-ragging bond that universities have signed. The Governor held a fast on July 14 to raise social awareness about practicing evil and preventing crimes against women, days after a spate of dowry murders devastated Kerala and sparked a passionate discussion about the threat. Many innovative recommendations were made at the conference, as per the Governor, who is also the chancellor of the state’s colleges.
While speaking about the proposal to abolish dowry, As per the Governor, the Chief Minister was pleased with the idea of creating an anti-dowry bond in universities for students. One was that while enrolling for admission, one must sign a bond stating that they will not accept or offer dowry, which is a criminal offense. As a result, colleges will need students to sign a bond promising to uphold the legislation.
The governor paid a visit to the homes of two medical students, one of whom was recently discovered dead at her husband’s home under bizarre circumstances after complaining of dowry harassment in the Kollam district.
