The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced that if bulk garbage generators do not install on-site composting facilities by the end of this month, they would be fined. In a news statement issued on Saturday, the Corporation Commissioner stated that in line with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and the MCC’s Solid Waste Treatment Plan, apartments and enterprises with more than 30 households, such as hotels, hospitals, lodges, wedding halls, caterers, and so on, are required by law to build on-site composting facilities and handle garbage at the source. All bulk solid waste generators have received many notifications and news announcements about the situation.
As a result, flats that do not follow the regulations will be required to pay a deposit of Rs15 per flat at the beginning of each month. Before turning over the garbage, the fine receipts must be given to the driver of the solid waste collection vehicle. In the second month, a fee of Rs 25 per flat will be imposed. The challan for paying the penalty can be acquired from the corporate office’s health division.
If the penalty payment receipts are not produced, the garbage will be rejected on the spot, and legal action will be taken against the bulk waste producers. The Karnataka High Court is now examining a writ case on the corporation’s solid waste management, as per the Commissioner. A government investigation was underway examining the corporation’s progress in adopting solid waste management procedures. The MCC had instructed all bulk trash producers to conduct on-site composting of wet garbage by October 31, 2021, after taking serious notice of the situation. Several institutions, however, have failed to follow the rules.
