Along with nine other sportsmen, gold medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and silver medalist wrestler Ravi Dahiya were selected for the renowned Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award Lovlina Borgohain, an Olympic bronze medalist in judo, footballer Sunil Chhetri, cricketer Mithali Raj, and hockey player PR Sreejesh were all nominated for the prize. Avani Lekhara, a paralympic shooter, was one of five para-athletes nominated for the Khel Ratna award.
Shikhar Dhawan, an Indian cricketer, was one of 35 sportsmen nominated for the Arjuna Award. Following India’s historic showing in hockey at the Tokyo Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed India’s top sports prize, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, after famous hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
