A second PU student in Dakshina Kannada district has become the first women priest to perform religious rituals on auspicious occasions. The holy scriptures do not mention anything prohibiting a woman from being priests in temples or other religious forums. Anagha Bhat from Bantwal paved her way to performing rituals and becoming a priest. It was easier for her as her father who is also a priest encouraged her.
It was because of her grandfather that she chose this path. He would constantly ask her why she wasn’t interested in learning Vedas. Sanskrit and Vedic scripts helped Anagha achieve it. It was through her father thar she fulfilled her grandfather’s wish. She accompanied her father in marriages and other religious events and eventually learned the process. She has also attempted to take up independent work under her father’s guidance.
The teenager feels extremely happy that everyone in her family of purohits encouraged her to study Vedas and become a priest. She has learned 15 sukthas of Rig veda and Rudrapaata of Yajur Veda. It is evident that no scripts prohibits women from learning vedas and performing rituals.
