States and Union Territories (UTs) have published new rules prohibiting the use of firecrackers in advance of Diwali, as required by the Supreme Court (SC). The Supreme Court has ruled that exploding firecrackers are illegal because they pollute the environment. The court has confirmed that there is no broad prohibition and that only crackers containing Barium salts are forbidden. It is made clear that the usage of firecrackers is not completely prohibited.
Only those firecrackers that have been determined to be harmful to residents’ health, particularly the health of senior persons and children, are prohibited, as per the SC. If states and UTs fail to comply with the court’s ruling, it will be taken seriously, as per the court. The Supreme Court also ordered states to employ electronic, print, and local cable media to inform residents about the prohibition on the manufacturing, usage, and sale of illegal firecrackers.
On Saturday, the Karnataka government released new guidelines for the sale of fireworks and the covid procedure. Firecrackers, except for green crackers, are forbidden from being marketed under the standards. Dealers have been given the authorization to begin selling these crackers on November 1 and will continue to do so until November 20. During the Christmas season, the Supreme Court has previously decreed that only green crackers be sold.
